1. What is Georgia TAPP?

GaTAPP is an acronym for The Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy®.

  • Provides various paths to Clear Renewable Certification based on an assessment of the Teacher-Candidate’s credentials, experiences, knowledge, skills, and dispositions
  • Is utilized by the State of Georgia to help reduce Georgia's teacher shortage
  • Enables individuals with a Bachelor's degree or higher (who meet eligibility requirements for the program) to teach early childhood, middle-grades, or secondary education
  • Is delivered by various PSC-approved program providers throughout Georgia
2. What are the Georgia TAPP eligibility requirements for candidates?
Candidates must have:
  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field from a PSC-approved accredited college or university [Link to related fields document]
  • A passing score on the GACE® Basic Skills Assessment (All three parts: reading, writing, and math) or exempt by one of the following:
    • SAT, ACT, or GRE scores high enough to exempt this requirement). View GACE® basic skills requirement for exemption scores ) To obtain SAT or GRE scores, you can contact the Educational Testing Service at www.ETS.org. ACT scores can be obtained at www.ACT.org. SAT and ACT scores are also available on high school transcripts.
    • Passed the Praxis I test prior to September 1, 2006.
    • Hold a Master’s degree or higher
  • Major in teaching field or a passing score on the GACE Content Assessment (Note special requirements for OYSP , CA , and ADAC [Link to Matrix]. Teacher Candidates in these paths must pass specific GACE Assessments prior to admission to the program. Adjunct Path must pass the licensure assessment for the field or, if there is no licensure exam, must pass the GACE Content Assessment.)
  • A satisfactory criminal background check (The employing system usually does the criminal background check.)
  • An offer of a full-time or part-time teaching position for at least two classes per day by a participating school system

3. What is a program provider?
Program providers are colleges, universities, Regional Education Service Agencies (RESAs), or Local Education Agencies (LEAs) approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) to offer a Georgia TAPP program.

5. How long are the GaTAPP paths to Clear Renewable Certification?
The Georgia TAPP paths are a minimum of one year with mentor/coaching and may take no more than 3 years to complete.

6. I understand that I must secure a job offer to participate in Georgia TAPP; how do I accomplish this?
The PSC has a Recruitment Services Division for teachers. Please visit www.teachgeorgia.org for additional information.

7. How much does Georgia TAPP cost?
The tuition costs for candidates will be determined by the program provider.

10. How do I get an application for the Georgia TAPP program?

The PSC approves the programs offered by the program providers. It does not provide applications or select candidates for the Georgia TAPP program. The program providers supply prospective program candidates' information for their programs. Please visit a list of Program Providers and contact information.

11. Can a previously certified teacher with two years of teaching experience be a Georgia TAPP candidate?
The GaTAPP program is designed for individuals who have not completed an education program in teaching and have no state Clear Renewable Teacher certification or its equivalent.

12. Can a Georgia TAPP teacher-candidate change school systems and continue in the program?
Teacher-candidates may change school systems and continue in the program, provided that it is a satisfactory arrangement with the employing school system and the GaTAPP provider.

13. What is the GACE® Basic Skills Assessment?
The GACE® Basic Skills Assessment is a series of three basic skills tests (mathematics, reading, writing) for which Georgia TAPP teacher-candidates must have passing scores in order to apply for an intern certificate.

14. How do I register for the GACE® tests? Where and when are the tests given?

15. What are the exemptions for PSC's basic skills requirement?

Exemptions include the candidate’s holding a Master’s degree or higher from a PSC approved college or university or qualifying scores on one of the following assessments:

  1. ACT - 21 English & 22 Mathematics or 43 Combined


  2. GRE - 490 Verbal & 540 Quantitative or 1030 Combined


  3. SAT - 480 Verbal & 520 Mathematics or 1000 Combined
16. How long are the test scores valid (ACT, GRE or SAT)?

To secure PRAXIS, SAT or GRE scores, contact Educational Testing Service at www.ETS.org. ACT scores can be obtained at www.ACT.org. GACE® scores are sent from www.nesinc.com.

 

17. How can I obtain my scores?
To secure PRAXIS, SAT or GRE scores, contact Educational Testing Service at www.ETS.org. ACT scores can be obtained at www.ACT.org. GACE® scores are sent from NES. If a candidate has difficulty in obtaining the scores from the testing agency, check high school transcripts or college records.

 

18. Can I retake the SAT instead of taking the GACE® Basic Skills Tests to obtain qualifying scores?
Yes.

19. Is a 2.5 GPA essential? For example, can a 2.49 be rounded off to 2.5?

No, GPA's are not rounded up, but approved providers can determine whether or not to accept the GPA for paths except the Core Academic Path which requires a 2.5 GPA.

 

20. Where and when are Georgia TAPP informational meetings/sessions held?
Program providers may offer GaTAPP information sessions for their GaTAPP paths. Please visit the PSC's website at Program Providers to obtain this information.

21. Does GaTAPP involve my going back to school full-time?
No. Teacher-candidates will teach during the day and attend seminars and Georgia Special Requirement classes in summer or evening while in the GaTAPP program. The instruction candidates take is individualized and determined by the Candidate Support Team (A school-based administrator, school-based mentor/coach, Provider Supervisor, and a content specialist if not already represented by a member of the team).

 

22. Will I be paid for teaching while participating in GATAPP®?

Yes. GaTAPP Teacher-Candidates are paid the same as teachers with a Non-renewable Certificate plus local supplements as determined by the school system. Pay Schedule

23. What is the GaTAPP Attendance Policy?

Attendance is required for all classes. If an emergency arises, the instructor and Betsy Dellenback must be notified. Documentation for any absence must be provided to the program coordinator.

24. What progam fees are associated with GaTAPP?
$3500 for Candidates employed by Northwest GA RESA member school systems
$4500 for Candidates employed by non-member public school systems located adjacent to Northwest GA RESA district
Any candidates requiring a third year extension will be required to pay an additional $500.

All program fees must be paid in full and are due with the Candidate’s registration.

Mentor Teacher Stipend

Full GA TAPP-$1000 payable upon completion of all responsibilities for the first year (minimum 100 hours documented contact time) and $500 upon completion of responsibilities the second year (minimum 50 hours documented contact time)
Advanced Degree Alternative Certification, Core Academic, Clinical Practice, One- Year Supervised Practicum-$500 payable upon completion of all responsibilities for the
first year
The mentor teacher stipend may be paid by supplementing or in addition to the TSS stipend.
It is the responsibility of the system to make arrangements for payment of this stipend.
Options for payment include:
1. System may pay.
2. System may require candidate to pay and arrange a payment plan.
3. System and candidate may each pay a portion.
4. RESA may invoice system and RESA make payment.

Recommended Textbooks, Materials, or Programs-to be determined by the Candidate Support Team as needed
Fees for Missed Appointments-Candidates missing scheduled appointments with RESA observers will be charged the actual amount incurred by RESA including travel and the consultant’s hourly rate.
